American Christians may instinctively assume that Christians only experience persecution in communist countries or jihadist theocracies; however, this assumption is incorrect.
As the United States and the western world move further and further away from Christian faith and Christian teachings, hostility toward Christianity has increased. In recent years, both individuals and governments in the U.S. and Europe have punished or mistreated Christians for their faith.
Family Research Council’s Center for Religious Liberty recently published the 2024 edition of a resource entitled “FREE TO BELIEVE? The Intensifying Intolerance Toward Christians in the West.” According to FRC, it has identified 168 violations of Christians’ religious liberty in 16 different countries between January 2020 and December 2023. FRC asserts that this report “offers valuable insights into the diverse ways Western governments—which ought to be the standard bearers for upholding freedom of religion and expression—are undermining the fundamental human right to religious freedom.”
New Yorker’s Family Research Foundation thanks FRC for creating this valuable resource. We encourage Christian believers to read it to learn more about the various threats to religious liberty in western nations. As we inform ourselves, let us fervently pray for a revival of Christian faith and of respect for each person’s God-given religious freedom.
