Cuomo’s Abortion Expansion Unites Catholics and Evangelicals

As the nationwide furor over the Reproductive Health Act (RHA) continues, a group of Roman Catholics and evangelicals has released a statement affirming their shared commitment to the sanctity of life.

On February 1, 2019, Evangelicals and Catholics Together released a Statement on the New York State Abortion Law of 2019. In the Statement, the group correctly described the RHA as “a dramatic expansion of the abortion regime in New York State.” The Statement notes that Gov. Andrew Cuomo, “a baptized Catholic, not only endorsed this bill, [but] celebrated its passage, directing One World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan to be lit in pink the day the bill passed.”

The Statement goes on to “affirm that every person, both born and in the womb, is made in the image and likeness of God.” The Statement concludes as follows:

We wish to state clearly that no follower of Jesus Christ can be complicit in the abortion regime. No follower of Jesus Christ can stand on the side of death and destruction. We appeal to our fellow Christians, and to all Americans, to join with us in decrying this legislation and in upholding and honoring the dignity of every human being. For the Lord Jesus came that “they may have life and have it abundantly.”

New Yorker’s Family Research Foundation (NYFRF) applauds the Statement from Evangelicals and Catholics Together. We are an evangelical Christian organization, and we acknowledge the theological differences between evangelicals and Roman Catholics. However, we greatly value our Roman Catholic colleagues in the pro-life movement, and we encourage all pro-life New Yorkers to work together in unity.
